A home server is the computer you never switch off: the family archive, photos, backups of the other PCs, services that run on their own. It is designed the opposite way to a desktop: drives, power draw and quietness matter, not raw speed.
The most common mistake we see is not the wrong processor: it is the wrong drive — a desktop drive doing a NAS job — and it shows at the worst possible moment, when one drive dies and the others must rebuild.

Not every drive is a NAS drive — the makers say so themselves. Mechanical drives use two different recording technologies, CMR and SMR, and the difference surfaces at the critical moments: Western Digital documents which of its models use each one and writes that during ZFS volume rebuilds SMR drives show significantly lower performance, recommending CMR models for those workloads. It is a nameplate fact, checked model by model before ordering — and it is the first line of our quote.
RAID is not backup. RAID protects you from a drive failure — not from deletion, malware, theft or mistakes. For data that matters the 3-2-1 rule recommended by CISA applies: three copies, on two different media, one off-site. A home server is often exactly the piece that makes that rule automatic for every PC in the house; if the data is already at risk, data recovery comes first, the build after.
Server memory does not fit by accident. DDR5 modules carry different keys for UDIMM (desktop) and RDIMM (server), as Kingston documents: a board accepts its own type and nothing else. It is the reminder that on this machine memory, motherboard and processor are chosen as a set, not piece by piece.
On 24/7, so power draw and quietness are design specs. An always-on machine is sized on the watts it draws at three in the morning, not on the peak: an efficient processor, a quality power supply sized low, big slow fans, and a case designed around drive bays and airflow. The network is planned wired: an archive is served over cable, not Wi-Fi.
Updated August 2026: for drives we start from the families the makers declare as CMR (for Western Digital: Red Plus and Red Pro); for the platform, boards with the SATA and M.2 the planned number of drives actually needs. Convenient models and sizes change often: the quote carries the current ones.
