This is the fault that gets worse if you postpone it: a stiff hinge dumps its force into the mounting points, and once those go a new hinge is no longer enough.

The mechanism is documented, not our theory. iFixit's editorial on loose hinges notes the same procedure «also works for loosening a laptop hinge that's too tight, which can cause bulging and cracking on the plastic casing».
The good news: hinges alone often exist as a part. Lenovo lists the hinge assembly and hinge caps separately on ThinkPads; HP supplies displays «only at the subcomponent level», hinges included. So «hinges or case?» is read from your model's parts catalogue.
The bad news: when the threaded inserts tear out, a new hinge has nothing to bolt to. Then the display back cover or the base cover is needed — both official parts.
Two claims with no source. That it is «a documented progressive failure»: no maker publishes hinge cycles or failure rates. That «plastic cases break more often than aluminium»: no manufacturer or third-party statistic exists.
