Repair service for Cracked or black display on a Windows laptop

In short: Cracked or black display on a Windows laptop

A cracked screen, vertical lines, spreading blotches, or black while the computer still boots: these are different faults with different answers, and diagnostics separates them in minutes.

One question matters: panel only, or the whole display assembly? The technician does not decide that — the manufacturer does, in your model's service manual.

Free diagnostics: we look at your model, not at «a 15-inch».

Panel only or full assembly? Your laptop's service manual decides

Which part exists depends on the maker. HP states in its service manuals that «display assemblies are spared at the subcomponent level only. Entire display hinge-ups are not spared»: on those machines the full assembly does not exist as a part. Lenovo lists the panel as a standalone FRU on ThinkPads. Dell publishes a dedicated panel-only removal procedure on several lines.

Touch changes everything, in writing. HP: «touch displays are spared only as the entire hinge-up. Non-touch displays are spared only at the subcomponent level». Touch glass and panel are laminated together and the digitizer has its own cable. On a touch laptop, «just the glass» is not a cheaper option: it is not an option.

Something repeated online that is not true. «30-pin and 40-pin are two eDP standards» and «40 pins means touch». VESA's own eDP publications contain no physical connector and no pin count for notebook panels: those are panel-maker conventions, not standard variants.

Hence the need for an exact match: pin count and pinout, connector position, native resolution, refresh rate, backlight type, brackets and thickness. There is no «15.6-inch panel»: there is your model's panel, with a part number.

What drives the quote
How the maker supplies the partpanel only, or assembly only — it varies by model
Touch or noton touch, many makers supply the full assembly only
Panel matchpins, pinout, resolution, refresh, backlight, brackets
Hinges involvedif a stiff hinge cracked the glass, the hinge has to be sorted too
Cable or boarda black screen is not necessarily the panel: we check first
Part availabilitydepends on the model code, not the screen size

The factors that actually move the cost of this job. They are not our rules: they depend on how the manufacturer supplies the part, and they are checked at the diagnosis stage before anything is ordered.

Frequently asked questions — Laptop display

Can just the glass be replaced?
On a laptop almost never. Makers supply the panel or the display assembly, not the glass alone. On touch, HP is explicit: «touch displays are spared only as the entire hinge-up».
The screen is black but the computer powers on: is it the panel?
Not necessarily, and that is the first check. An image on an external monitor points at the panel, the cable or the backlight; no image there means the problem is upstream.
I found a cheap 15.6" panel online: will it fit?
Size is not enough. Pins and pinout, connector position, resolution, refresh rate, backlight, holes and thickness all have to match.
How do I find my laptop's exact model?
There is a label underneath the machine with the model and serial number: that is what counts, not «15-inch HP». Every manufacturer identifies parts by a code tied to that number. Send us a photo of the label on WhatsApp.
How long does it take?
It comes down to one thing: whether the part is already here or has to be ordered. On a Windows laptop the right part depends on the model code, not on the size, so parts are ordered after diagnostics. When the part lands we work on it immediately.
