For a new phone we start from the official tools, not miracle apps. On iPhone, Apple provides Quick Start, the direct transfer from old to new — with an honest warning written by Apple itself: the transfer "occupies both devices", which must stay close and on power until it finishes. On Android, Google recommends the cable transfer, or — if the old phone is gone — restoring from the Google Account backup. These are good procedures, and they are the ones we use: the value is doing them in the right order, without losing pieces along the way.
Because "automatic" does not mean "complete". It is Google's own documentation that lists what the Android-to-Android transfer does not bring along: downloads such as PDFs, apps installed outside the Play Store, and accounts other than Google with their data. That is precisely the list people come back for a week later — and the reason our set-up ends with a test done together, not with handing over the box.
On a new PC the real work is twofold: bringing in what is yours — data, email, the programs you actually use, the printer — and removing what is not needed, with system and drivers updated before handover. If the old PC is retiring with the end of Windows 10 support, the right moment to decide is before the move; and if the new PC does not exist yet, it can be built to order.
Accounts and email are the centre of the digital household, and security is set up like everything else. CISA — the US cybersecurity agency — writes that users who enable multifactor authentication are "significantly less likely to get hacked": we switch it on together on the accounts that matter, with methods you can then use on your own. And backup is configured now, not after the damage: the 3-2-1 rule — three copies, two media, one off-site — so that data recovery stays a trade you never need.
The printer is every household's rite of passage: we put it on the network once and properly — drivers on every device, scanning that lands on phone and PC, a test page printed in front of you. That goes for new printers and for the ones "that used to work": often the problem is not the printer, it is the configuration that got lost.
