Repair service for Microsoft Xbox Wireless Controller

Repairing your Microsoft Xbox Wireless Controller

We have already worked on this one. Three units came in with stick drift, all three went back working. It is the first job in this category in our record.

The cause is always the same and it is not brand-specific: the stick potentiometer wears its own contact track. On model 1914 iFixit counts exactly 14 solder joints per module.

And there is a second route: for drift there is also a job with no soldering iron. Which one makes sense we say after looking at yours. Free diagnostics.

Stick drift, 14 solder joints and the no-soldering route: the Xbox controller

The Series-generation Xbox controller (model 1914) uses the same stick hardware as the DualSense, DualShock 4 and Switch Pro Controller: iFixit states it explicitly. Drift is not a Microsoft weakness, it is the limit of a component the whole industry adopted.

Here the module is soldered, and the count is precise: fourteen joints, split between frame anchors, potentiometers and the push-button. The active iFixit guide is «Xbox Series X/S Wireless Controller Joystick Replacement»; an older one titled for model 1914 exists but is archived.

The no-soldering route exists and is documented. iFixit publishes a guide for fixing drift without soldering and sells a trimmer potentiometer sensor part.

One practical detail that surprises people coming from PlayStation: this controller runs on two AA batteries. If yours cuts out, the battery compartment contact is the most common and most trivial cause.

Frequently asked questions about the Controller Xbox

Can drift be fixed without soldering?
Sometimes. iFixit publishes a dedicated guide for fixing drift without a soldering iron and sells a trimmer sensor part. It does not work in every case.
How many solder joints does the module have?
Fourteen, and the iFixit guide lists them one by one.
It cuts out suddenly: is it the battery?
On this controller the first thing to rule out is trivial: it runs on two AA batteries, and the compartment contact is the most frequent cause.
What warranty comes with the part?
The cover is the one provided by the parts supplier and it is stated in the quote, before you decide. We do not apply a single blanket period: an original module and a compatible one do not carry the same cover.
How long does it take?
It comes down to one thing: whether the part is already here or has to be ordered. Parts are ordered after diagnostics. If you arrive with diagnostics already done, the order goes out straight away. When the part lands we work on it immediately.
