Repair service for Nintendo Switch Pro Controller

Repairing your Nintendo Switch Pro Controller

The «serious» Switch controller, and the one that is not covered by the free stick repair: Nintendo declares that for Joy-Con and Switch Lite, not for the Pro.

Here drift is handled as on a DualSense or an Xbox controller: the stick module is soldered to the board, and the iFixit guide opens by saying you must be able to solder.

The battery, on the other hand, is the easy part — and on an older controller it is often the real problem. Free diagnostics.

A soldered stick and a battery you lift with a fingernail: the Switch Pro Controller

The Pro Controller stick module is soldered. The iFixit guide says so up front — «to complete this project, you must be able to solder». Unlike the Xbox controller guide, iFixit does not state how many joints there are: it says «all of the outlined solder joints». We report it as it is rather than inventing a number.

One clarification worth making, because the opposite circulates online: no primary source confirms that the Pro Controller uses the same stick module as the DualSense and Xbox. The iFixit guide calls it only «the joystick module», naming no manufacturer. The failure behaves the same way, but part interchangeability does not follow.

The battery is the simplest job on this page. The dedicated iFixit guide describes it as lifting out by hand with a fingernail or plastic tool, needing «only a small amount of force». No soldering.

Otherwise it is a well-built controller, asymmetric like the Xbox one but with a D-pad made of four separate buttons rather than a dished disc.

Frequently asked questions about the Pro Controller

Is the Pro Controller covered by Nintendo's free repair?
No. The Nintendo support pages declaring free repair of stick responsiveness syndrome cover Joy-Con and the Switch Lite.
Is the stick soldered like on a DualSense?
Soldered, yes: the iFixit guide opens by saying you must be able to solder. What no primary source confirms is that it is the very same module as the DualSense and Xbox ones.
It will not hold a charge: can the battery be changed?
Yes, and it is the simplest job in this section. iFixit describes it lifting out with a fingernail or plastic tool: no soldering.
What warranty comes with the part?
The cover is the one provided by the parts supplier and it is stated in the quote, before you decide. An original module and a compatible one do not carry the same cover.
How long does it take?
It comes down to one thing: whether the part is already here or has to be ordered. Parts are ordered after diagnostics. When the part lands we work on it immediately.
