Repair service for Apple iMac 24" (M1, 2021)

Repairing your Apple iMac 24" (M1, 2021)

This is the colourful, ultra-thin 2021 iMac, the first with an Apple chip. Thin means one thing from a repairer's point of view: there is no room inside for anything modular.

Memory and storage are one body with the chip. That is the design, not a fault in your machine. Knowing what can and cannot be done before you spend is half the job.

Free diagnostics — including when the honest answer is «not worth it».

iMac 24" M1: 2 out of 10 for repairability, memory in the chip, one or two fans

iFixit gives this iMac 2 out of 10 for repairability. The teardown is blunt: «memory is soldered directly to the M1 package, making it impractical to ever replace or upgrade», and «there's no altering the internal storage — a severe blow to repairs, upgrades, data recovery, and even security».

There is good news too, from the same teardown: the display adhesive here is the classic iMac kind and «carves open easily», not the nightmare glue that was feared. Opening for a clean or for board work is a job that can be done properly.

The fans are not the same on every unit. iFixit notes the mid-tier machine has «two small fans (vs. just one in the base model)». If yours runs hot and loud, the configuration matters.

No Apple service programme is active for this model. Servicing recommended every 18–24 months.

Frequently asked questions about the iMac 24" M1

Can I increase the memory or the storage?
No, and it is not our choice. iFixit documents that memory is soldered to the chip package and that internal storage cannot be altered.
It is noisier than my old iMac: is that normal?
It depends which M1 iMac you have. iFixit found one fan on the base model and two on the higher ones: with a single fan the same dust is twice as audible.
If the board fails, can I get my data back?
With a soldered SSD and a failed board there is no ordinary path: there is no drive to pull out. That is why backups matter here.
What warranty comes with the part?
The cover is the one provided by the parts supplier and it is stated in the quote, before you decide. An original module and a compatible one do not carry the same cover.
How long does it take?
It comes down to one thing: whether the part is already here or has to be ordered. Parts are ordered after diagnostics. When the part lands we work on it immediately.
