Repair service for Apple Mac mini (Intel, 2018)

Repairing your Apple Mac mini (Intel, 2018)

Among the Macs of those years, the 2018 mini is one of the few with good news inside: standard memory modules that really can be upgraded.

iFixit gives it 6 out of 10 for repairability, twice an iMac of the same period. Not everything is rosy: CPU and storage are soldered, and the T2 chip changes the rules on data recovery.

Free diagnostics: we know where this machine can be saved and where it cannot.

Mac mini 2018: genuinely upgradeable RAM, soldered SSD and a T2 chip

Anyone telling you the 2018 mini has soldered RAM is wrong. iFixit's teardown is explicit — «the mini packs standard SO-DIMMs allowing both DIY upgrades and replacements». The 2014 mini did have soldered memory: confusing the two is the source of half the bad information online.

The same source is just as clear on the rest: «the CPU and storage are both soldered to the logic board and not user-upgradeable». So yes to RAM, no to the SSD.

The T2 chip has to be explained before a failure, not after. Apple's own T2 document states that «if internal storage media are physically moved from one device to another, the files they contain are inaccessible».

The rest is servicing: the mini is small, airflow is tight and dust builds up fast. We recommend a clean and fresh thermal paste every 18–24 months — our recommendation, not an Apple-published interval.

Frequently asked questions about the Mac mini Intel

Can I increase the RAM in my 2018 Mac mini?
Yes, and it is one of the few Macs of that period where you can. iFixit confirms standard SO-DIMMs. It adds years of useful life.
What about the SSD?
No. On the 2018 mini storage is soldered to the board. There is no spare internal connector: the route to more space is a fast external drive.
If the board dies, can the data be recovered?
Apple effectively answers no: its T2 document states that moving internal storage to another device makes the files inaccessible. Backups are not optional here.
What warranty comes with the part?
The cover is the one provided by the parts supplier and it is stated in the quote, before you decide. An original module and a compatible one do not carry the same cover.
How long does it take?
It comes down to one thing: whether the part is already here or has to be ordered. Parts are ordered after diagnostics. When the part lands we work on it immediately.
