Repair service for Apple MacBook Air 13" (M1, 2020)

Repairing your Apple MacBook Air 13" (M1, 2020)

The first Apple-silicon Air, and the first with no fan. That is not a spec sheet detail: it means that on this machine «thermal servicing» — the first job on any other laptop — simply does not exist.

Nothing spins inside: iFixit documents an aluminium heat spreader in place of the fan, with a cold plate over the processor. Anyone offering «fan cleaning and thermal paste» on an M1 Air is selling a job that is not there.

Not sure what is broken?

Four questions and we tell you the likely repair. Then you message us with the problem already written in.

No fan, a battery of its own and six adhesive strips: the MacBook Air M1

The fact that changes everything is the missing fan. iFixit puts it plainly: «The Air no longer actively moves air». On this model an Air that runs hot or slow is not fixed by a clean-out.

The battery is the good news. Apple's repair manual lists «Battery» and «Top Case with Keyboard» as two distinct procedures: the battery is replaced without taking the whole upper assembly. The opposite of the MacBook Pro of the same generation.

The iFixit guide counts six stretch-release adhesive strips holding the battery pack to its tray. That is the part of the job that needs patience, not force.

Memory and storage cannot be touched. Apple states that the memory is integrated into the chip package and cannot be upgraded.

Frequently asked questions about the MacBook Air M1

I was offered a fan clean: does it make sense?
Not on this model: the MacBook Air M1 has no fan. iFixit documents it in the teardown. If the machine runs hot or slow, the cause is elsewhere.
The battery barely lasts: do I have to change the whole keyboard?
No. Apple's manual for this model has «Battery» as its own procedure, distinct from «Top Case with Keyboard». On the 13" M1 and M2 Pro, it is the opposite.
Can I add memory later?
No. Apple states the memory is integrated into the chip package and «can't be upgraded».
If the board fails, can my data be recovered?
On a recent Mac this has to be said upfront. Apple documents that the encryption keys are built on the chip's hardware, and states that internal APFS volumes «remain encrypted and are protected from unauthorized access even if the physical storage device is removed and connected to another computer». With a soldered SSD and a failed logic board there is no ordinary recovery path.
How long does it take?
It comes down to one thing: whether the part is already here or has to be ordered. Parts are ordered after diagnostics. When the part lands we work on it immediately.
