Repair service for Apple Mac mini (Apple Silicon: M1 2020, M2 2023, M4 2024)

Repairing your Apple Mac mini (Apple Silicon: M1 2020, M2 2023, M4 2024)

Three generations that look alike outside and differ a lot inside. The difference that really matters: on the M4 Mac mini the SSD is a removable module again, while on M1 and M2 it is soldered.

And one thing can save you the whole bill: if yours is a 2023 Mac mini with an M2 chip that will not power on, it may fall under a free Apple service programme that is still active.

Mac mini M1, M2 and M4: soldered or removable SSD, and Apple's no-power programme

The fact worth money, before anything else. Apple runs a service programme for 2023 Mac mini units with an M2 chip that no longer power on. It covers units manufactured between 16 June 2024 and 23 November 2024, eligibility is checked by serial number on Apple's page, and the cover lasts three years after the unit's first retail sale. Service is free at Apple or an authorised provider. Apple notes the programme «does not extend the standard warranty coverage».

M1 and M2: nothing to upgrade inside. iFixit's M2 mini teardown states that «the CPU and storage are both soldered to the logic board and not user-upgradeable». iFixit scores the M1 mini 5 out of 10 and the M2 mini 6 out of 10.

The M4 mini changes things, but less than it seems. iFixit confirmed that «it's possible to pop the SSD out after removing a screw, and then switch in a higher capacity one» — while warning that «the SSD's proprietary format makes aftermarket upgrades tricky»: Apple Configurator pairing is required, and M4 and M4 Pro drives are not interchangeable. The RAM stays soldered. iFixit score: 7 out of 10, marked provisional.

Otherwise the mini is a small machine with tight airflow. We recommend a clean and fresh thermal paste every 18–24 months — our recommendation, no manufacturer publishes one.

Frequently asked questions about the Mac mini M1, M2 e M4

My M2 Mac mini will not power on: do I have to pay?
Check before paying anything. Apple runs an active service programme for 2023 Mac mini units with an M2 chip that do not power on, for units manufactured between 16 June and 23 November 2024: eligibility is by serial number and service is free, for three years after first retail sale.
Can I increase the SSD in my Mac mini?
It depends on the generation. On M1 and M2 no — iFixit documents soldered storage. On the M4 yes, it is a removable module — but a proprietary format that needs Apple Configurator pairing, and M4 and M4 Pro drives are not interchangeable.
Can I add memory?
No, on none of the three. Unified memory is soldered, even on the M4 mini where storage went modular again.
If the board fails, can my data be recovered?
On a recent Mac this has to be said upfront. Apple documents that the encryption keys are built on the chip's hardware, and states that internal APFS volumes «remain encrypted and are protected from unauthorized access even if the physical storage device is removed and connected to another computer». With a soldered SSD and a failed logic board there is no ordinary recovery path.
How long does it take?
It comes down to one thing: whether the part is already here or has to be ordered. Parts are ordered after diagnostics. When the part lands we work on it immediately.
