Repair service for Apple iPad 10th generation

Repairing your Apple iPad 10th generation

The iPad 10th generation is the one that changed everything on the entry-level iPad: no Home button, no Lightning, no headphone jack, and the front camera moved to the long edge.

It is the first entry-level iPad designed to be held in landscape, which is how it actually gets used on video calls. It is also the one that confuses anyone arriving with accessories from the old iPad.

Free diagnostics. Here too, the glass is still a part separate from the panel.

iPad 10th generation: USB-C, no Home button and glass that is still separate

Compared with the 9th generation almost everything changes on the ports: USB-C arrives, the 3.5 mm jack disappears and Touch ID moves to the top button, the power one. Anyone turning up with a Lightning cable and a pair of wired headphones finds out here. The top button now does two jobs at once: it powers on and reads the fingerprint, so a button that responds badly is a double problem.

On this iPad the glass with the digitiser is a part separate from the panel. In practice: if the glass is cracked but the image is clean and touch responds, often only the glass is replaced and it costs far less than on an iPad Air or Pro. If instead the image has lines or black areas, the panel is gone too and that has to be replaced as well. It is the first thing we check.

The front camera sits on the long edge, no longer on the short side: a first for an iPad. For whoever repairs it, that means the camera cable runs where it did not before, and the glass has to be lifted in a different order than on the 9th generation. No magic: just one more part to watch while opening it.

Frequently asked questions about the iPad 10th generation

I have the Apple Pencil from my old iPad: does it work on this one?
The 1st generation Pencil works, but it needs the USB-C adapter, because this iPad no longer has Lightning to pair it. The alternative is the Apple Pencil USB-C. If yours will not pair, before assuming a fault we check which of the two you have.
The power button no longer unlocks with my fingerprint: can it be repaired?
It depends what is broken. If the button is mechanically gone it gets replaced, and on this iPad Touch ID is re-enabled with Apple's recalibration procedure: unlike the 9th generation iPad, where a new Home button does not bring Touch ID back. If instead the button works and only the fingerprint does not, it is often a configuration issue and needs no parts: we check that during diagnosis, free of charge.
The glass is cracked in one corner only: is it worth repairing?
Yes, and it is worth doing soon. On glass that is separate from the panel, a crack in one corner is the cheapest case there is. If you wait, the crack travels, fragments get under the edge, and what was a glass replacement becomes a display replacement.
The Apple Pencil no longer pairs or does not write: is it the stylus or the tablet?
They are two different things and we tell them apart at the diagnosis stage. If the Pencil neither charges nor pairs, the problem is often the Pencil itself. If instead it writes erratically or only in one area of the screen, the suspect is the tablet's digitiser — the layer that reads touch, which sits with the display.
Will I lose my photos and documents if the display is replaced?
Storage is a different component and a display job does not touch it. That said, on a device that has to be opened no serious workshop can guarantee you a hundred per cent. That said, before any job we always ask you to back up to iCloud or to a computer: it is not a formality: it is the one thing that protects you if something goes wrong.
