Repair service for Apple iPad mini (A17 Pro)

Repairing your Apple iPad mini (A17 Pro)

The iPad mini is the iPad that fits in one hand and in a jacket pocket, and that is why it breaks differently from the others: it does not fall off the table, it falls while you are holding it.

It is also the densest display in the range, 326 pixels per inch against 264 on every other iPad, inside just 8.3 inches.

iPad mini A17 Pro: 326 ppi in 8.3 inches, and everything tighter inside

The 8.3 inches change the work more than it looks. The battery is 19.3 Wh, about 5,078 mAh — the smallest of any iPad — and it still fills nearly all the internal volume. That means there is very little margin under the housing: cables run close to one another and every part has to go back exactly where it was, or the housing will not close flat again.

On this iPad the display is fully laminated: glass and panel are bonded together and are replaced as a single part. That is the difference that weighs most on the quote compared with the entry-level iPads, where the glass can be replaced on its own. It is not a flaw — lamination is what removes the air gap between glass and image. But it has to be said up front, not afterwards.

Cellular versions are eSIM only, Touch ID is in the top button and the port is a fast USB-C, USB 3 at 10 Gb/s. On a tablet that lives in a bag the port is the first thing to get dirty: before talking about replacing it, we clean it and retry during diagnosis.

Frequently asked questions about the iPad mini (A17 Pro)

It is small: is it easier or harder to repair?
Harder, generally. Those 8.3 inches hold about as many components as a larger tablet, only closer together. That is not a problem, it is simply why we go slower on this model.
The battery lasts less than it used to: is that normal after a few years?
Yes, all lithium batteries decline with cycles. On a mini it weighs more because the cell is the smallest in the range, so the same percentage lost is felt more in use. If the drop is sharp, replacement makes sense.
I use it as a reader and the housing has lifted slightly: is that serious?
Yes, and it is the one thing not to postpone. A housing lifting on a tablet almost always means a swollen battery. Stop charging it, do not press it back closed, and bring it in: it is the only case where we ask you not to wait.
The Apple Pencil no longer pairs or does not write: is it the stylus or the tablet?
They are two different things and we tell them apart at the diagnosis stage. If the Pencil neither charges nor pairs, the problem is often the Pencil itself. If instead it writes erratically or only in one area of the screen, the suspect is the tablet's digitiser — the layer that reads touch, which sits with the display.
Will I lose my photos and documents if the display is replaced?
Storage is a different component and a display job does not touch it. That said, on a device that has to be opened no serious workshop can guarantee you a hundred per cent. That said, before any job we always ask you to back up to iCloud or to a computer: it is not a formality: it is the one thing that protects you if something goes wrong.
