Repair service for Apple MacBook Pro 13" Function Keys (2016–2017)

Repairing your Apple MacBook Pro 13" Function Keys (2016–2017)

This model has two things no other Mac of those years has, one good and one bad. The good: the SSD is a removable module. The bad: it is the flexgate generation.

Flexgate is the backlight going: first a dark band at the bottom of the screen, then the image cutting out past a certain lid angle. iFixit documents it as a design defect.

Apple ran a repair programme. It is closed, and it did not cover this model in 2017. Free diagnostics.

Not sure what is broken?

Four questions and we tell you the likely repair. Then you message us with the problem already written in.

Flexgate, a removable SSD and a programme that did not cover everyone

On flexgate iFixit is blunt: the flex cables fatigue with every open and close, the backlight cable fails first, and you get the «stage light» effect. The point that changes the quote: «Apple designed the cables as part of the display, so they cannot be replaced»the whole display assembly is replaced.

The Apple backlight programme is closed, with a clarification worth making. Even while active, iFixit documents that it covered only the 2016 13-inch: 2017 models and 15-inch ones were not eligible.

The SSD is the good news, with an asterisk. On this model only, the SSD is a removable module. But iFixit warns: «The proprietary PCIe SSD still isn't a standard drive» — Apple form factor and connector, not M.2 NVMe.

Otherwise it is an Intel laptop with fans and thermal paste. We recommend servicing every 18–24 months.

Frequently asked questions about the MacBook Pro 13" Function Keys

There is a dark band at the bottom of the screen and it cuts out when I close it: what is it?
It is flexgate. iFixit documents it as a design defect from 2016 onwards. The practical point is that Apple designed those cables as part of the display: the prescribed route is the full display assembly.
Wasn't there a free Apple repair for this?
There was, and it is closed. And even while active it covered only the 2016 13-inch.
Can I fit a larger SSD bought online?
The SSD is genuinely removable here. But iFixit warns it is proprietary Apple PCIe, not M.2 NVMe.
What warranty comes with the part?
The cover is the one provided by the parts supplier and it is stated in the quote, before you decide. An original module and a compatible one do not carry the same cover.
How long does it take?
It comes down to one thing: whether the part is already here or has to be ordered. Parts are ordered after diagnostics. When the part lands we work on it immediately.
