Repair service for Microsoft Xbox One (2013)

Repairing your Microsoft Xbox One (2013)

The 2013 black brick, with an external power supply the size of a book. It is over ten years old, and the ones still running hold ten years of dust.

It is the console on this page where thermal servicing pays off most: ordinary thermal paste, plenty of internal room, and no liquid-metal surprises.

Free diagnostics, and we tell you frankly whether it is worth it at this age.

External PSU, hard drive and dust: servicing the 2013 Xbox One

The first Xbox One is the only one in the family with an external power supply. iFixit calls it the least elegant part of the design, but for repair it is a convenience: a power fault can be isolated by swapping an accessory.

On the hard drive an honest clarification is due, because plenty of nonsense circulates. The drive is a standard 2.5-inch unit and can physically be replaced: iFixit writes that it is «technically user-replaceable», though Microsoft does not support it officially. What changes things is preparation: the guide warns that older firmware cannot format the new drive, in which case it must be prepared on a PC. So it is not «drop in and go» — but it is not locked either.

The rest is the classic job: open it, clear the heatsink of dust, and redo the thermal paste. The split between the glossy half and the vented half runs front to back, and those vents are where air comes in.

The HDMI port is soldered to the board — iFixit sells the part for Xbox One and One X and treats it as board-level rework. Servicing recommended every 18–24 months.

Frequently asked questions about the Xbox One

Can I fit a larger drive?
Physically yes: it is a standard 2.5-inch unit and iFixit calls it «technically user-replaceable». The part to know is preparation: older firmware cannot format the new drive and it must be prepared on a PC.
The external power brick is noisy or hot: is that a problem?
It is the easiest part of the whole console to isolate, precisely because it is external.
Is servicing a 2013 console worth it?
It depends how much you use it, and we say so after looking at it. What is certain is that a One that is loud or shutting down today is usually not broken: it is packed with dust with dried-out paste.
Will I lose my games and saves?
A mechanical job does not touch anything that is stored. When the work involves the storage unit we tell you beforehand and agree how to proceed.
How long does it take?
It comes down to one thing: whether the part is already here or has to be ordered. Parts are ordered after diagnostics. If you arrive with diagnostics already done, the order goes out straight away. When the part lands we work on it immediately.
