Repair service for Microsoft Xbox Series X

Repairing your Microsoft Xbox Series X

The black tower is designed to push air out of the top, and as long as that route stays clear the Series X is a quiet console. When it clogs, the margin disappears quickly.

Inside is serious cooling: iFixit documents a copper vapor chamber feeding the fins, with the fan drawing air in through the bottom. The square 144-hole grille on top is the exit — and where everything in the room collects.

Vapor chamber, two thermal materials and the square grille: servicing an Xbox Series X

Servicing a Series X is not a generic «paste change», because there are two thermal materials. The official iFixit guide calls for thermal paste on the APU and thermal putty on the memory chips. Two different products, two different ways of applying them.

The heatsink does not unclip. It is held by a screwed tension bracket on the APU, and the guide insists on one point: the screws must be loosened and tightened a few turns at a time, in an X pattern. The guide also warns that the board may be bonded to the heatsink assembly.

Outside the thermal compartment the console is generous. The power supply is internal and replaceable as a module, with its own guide and part. The HDMI port, by contrast, is soldered, and both iFixit and Microsoft's own service documentation treat it as board-level rework.

Servicing recommended every 18–24 months, sooner if the fan is always at full tilt. No manufacturer publishes an interval — this is our workshop's recommendation.

Frequently asked questions about the Xbox Series X

Which thermal paste goes on a Series X?
Not one. The iFixit guide calls for thermal paste on the processor and thermal putty on the memory chips: two materials in the same job.
The fan is loud: should it be replaced?
First we look at the grille and the vapor chamber. If the airflow path is clogged, the fan runs flat out because the heat cannot escape.
Can the power supply be changed without touching the rest?
Yes, and it is one of the few genuinely modular jobs of this generation.
Will I lose my games and saves?
A mechanical job does not touch anything that is stored. When the work involves the storage unit we tell you beforehand and agree how to proceed.
How long does it take?
It comes down to one thing: whether the part is already here or has to be ordered. Parts are ordered after diagnostics. If you arrive with diagnostics already done, the order goes out straight away. When the part lands we work on it immediately.
