Same substance as the first-series PS5, a smaller body, and one difference that really matters when something breaks: the disc drive comes off without tools. It looks like the end of the problem. Not quite — and it is worth knowing before you buy a used drive online.
Sony states it on its own support page: pairing a drive to the console requires an internet connection. The part clips on by hand in ten seconds, but until it is paired it reads nothing. That is why a «compatible» drive sometimes seems dead on arrival.
The rest is the same console: the same liquid metal on the APU, the same foam barrier, the same caution. Free diagnostics, and we tell you what each route involves.

The PS5 Slim (CFI-2000) is shorter, shallower and lighter, and Sony brought back the split panel line: four covers instead of two, glossy on top and matte below. For whoever opens it, though, the real change is that the drive assembly became an external module that clips onto the side without a single screw.
With an asterisk. Sony explicitly states that an internet connection is required to pair drive and console during setup, and iFixit confirms it, calling the console «repairable with an asterisk». The technical mechanism of the pairing is not documented by any primary source: what is certain is that without pairing the drive does not read.
On the thermal side nothing changed: liquid metal here too, same foam barrier, same iFixit warning about shorting. The guide also flags a model-specific risk: spillage when the board assembly is flipped during reassembly. The fan sits behind its own panel, but the outer grille is closed with plastic welds and cannot be opened separately.
One practical detail that often surprises people: the Slim does not include the vertical stand, which is sold separately. Servicing recommended every 18–24 months.
