The fan spins up like a hairdryer the moment you load a game. Or it shuts down on its own mid-match, with no warning. Or the disc goes in, spins and comes straight back out. None of these is a reason to buy another one.
There is one thing to know about the PS5 first, and it is why we do not treat this console like the others: between the processor and the heatsink Sony did not use thermal paste, it used liquid metal, held in place by a foam barrier. It is conductive: if it runs onto the board it does not make cooling worse, it shorts the console out.
Bring it in and diagnostics are free: we tell you what is actually broken, which part we propose, what it costs and how long it takes. You decide, before anything is touched.
Four questions and we tell you the likely repair. Then you message us with the problem already written in.
Messaging us on WhatsApp shares your number and what you tell us: we use them only to reply and prepare your quote. How we handle your data.
The first-series PS5 (CFI-1000, 1100 and 1200) is the console that rewards good servicing and punishes bad servicing more than any other. The reason is the thermal interface: iFixit documents liquid metal on the APU held by a perimeter foam barrier, and warns explicitly not to remove it, because the material is conductive and one drop on the board is enough to short the console. This is not a paste change: it is a different job, with a different material and a different risk.
The disc drive is the second thing that changes the quote. On the first-series PS5 the drive is paired to the motherboard: iFixit sells them as an inseparable pair and states that an unpaired drive will not recognise discs. In practice: if the fault is the drive, swapping in one from another console does not fix it.
The good news is everything else. The fan is a 120 mm dual-intake blower, and Sony provided vacuumable dust ports: part of routine servicing does not even require opening the console. The power supply is an internal replaceable module. The M.2 expansion slot is one screw away. The HDMI port, on the other hand, is soldered to the board.
We recommend servicing every 18–24 months, and sooner if the fan is always at full tilt or the console shuts down by itself. No manufacturer publishes an interval — this is our workshop's recommendation, based on what we find inside.
