Repair service for Microsoft Xbox Series S

Repairing your Microsoft Xbox Series S

Small, white, with one large black circle: the console that fits anywhere — and that is exactly why it often ends up where air does not move.

It has no optical drive: Microsoft states it, this is a digital-only console. One fault fewer to diagnose, and one slot fewer for dust.

Free diagnostics, and if the problem is where you keep it we say so instead of selling you a part.

X-clamp, thermal paste and no disc drive: servicing an Xbox Series S

The Series S heatsink is fixed differently from the Series X one, and for whoever works on it that is the difference that counts. iFixit lists a dedicated x-clamp part for the Series S, and the product page warns to apply fresh thermal paste on reassembly. On the Series X that clip does not exist: there it is a screwed tension bracket with X-pattern torque.

No optical drive. The Xbox site states it: «use with digital games only; console does not play physical discs». Microsoft's own Series S service guide contains no optical assembly procedure at all. For repair that means one thing: if a Series S will not start, the drive is never the cause.

The power supply is internal and replaceable as a module: iFixit has a dedicated guide and part, and Microsoft's official documentation has a whole PSU replacement section. The HDMI port, by contrast, has to be desoldered and resoldered — the Microsoft service guide literally has «HDMI Desoldering and Soldering» sections.

Servicing recommended every 18–24 months. On this console one free piece of advice also applies: give it room.

Frequently asked questions about the Xbox Series S

The Series S shuts down by itself: where do you start?
With ventilation, and it often ends there. If air does not move, thermal protection kicks in. Before ordering any part we look at the thermals: sometimes the repair is moving it twenty centimetres.
It will not read the disc I bought.
It is not a fault: the Series S has no drive, it is digital-only, and Microsoft states so on the product page.
Is servicing the same as on a Series X?
No. The Series S uses an x-clamp, which iFixit sells as its own part; the Series X uses a screwed tension bracket with X-pattern torque.
Will I lose my games and saves?
A mechanical job does not touch anything that is stored. When the work involves the storage unit we tell you beforehand and agree how to proceed.
How long does it take?
It comes down to one thing: whether the part is already here or has to be ordered. Parts are ordered after diagnostics. If you arrive with diagnostics already done, the order goes out straight away. When the part lands we work on it immediately.
