Repair service for Nintendo Switch

Repairing your Nintendo Switch

It is a console you carry around, and consoles you carry around get dropped, scratched and shoved into a bag with the keys. Almost everything that happens to it can be repaired.

One thing in particular saves real money: on the 2017 Switch the glass is separable from the panel. Cracked glass with a perfect picture means replacing the glass only. On the OLED that is not the case.

Free diagnostics: first we work out what is actually broken, then we order the right part.

Separable glass, a soldered USB-C port and thermal paste: repairing a Nintendo Switch

Glass and panel are two distinct parts, and iFixit sells them separately: the front digitiser on one side, the LCD panel on the other, plus a complete assembly. In quote terms: scratched or cracked glass with a perfect picture is a cheap, low-risk repair.

The USB-C port is soldered to the motherboard, and iFixit says so as plainly as possible: it «requires micro soldering and board level repair skills», and «it is not part of a modular replacement component». A Switch that will not charge is not fixed by plugging in a new part.

Inside there is also what nobody expects from a handheld: a fan and thermal paste. iFixit has dedicated fan and heatsink guides, and the paste procedure lives inside the heatsink guide — which is why searching for a «thermal paste» guide finds nothing.

The rest is wear: battery, speakers, cartridge slot and the Joy-Con rails. On those, note that iFixit distinguishes the charging rail from the sensor rail, with separate guides per side and per model. Servicing recommended every 18–24 months.

Frequently asked questions about the Switch

The glass is broken but the screen still shows: do I need the lot?
On the 2017 Switch, no. Glass and LCD are two distinct parts. On the Switch OLED the glass is fused to the panel and the whole assembly is replaced.
It stopped charging: cable or console?
First we rule out the cable and charger. If it is the port: the USB-C is soldered to the motherboard and there is no module to plug in. It is micro-soldering work.
Does a Switch need servicing like a home console?
Yes, and it surprises almost everyone: inside there is a fan and thermal paste, documented by iFixit. We recommend every 18–24 months.
Will I lose my games and saves?
A mechanical job does not touch anything that is stored. When the work involves storage we tell you beforehand and agree how to proceed.
How long does it take?
It comes down to one thing: whether the part is already here or has to be ordered. Parts are ordered after diagnostics. When the part lands we work on it immediately.
