This is the 21.5-inch all-in-one iMac with a 4K screen: lovely to look at, sealed like a box. To reach any internal part the display has to come off, and it is glued to the chassis with double-sided tape.
That changes two things for you: it is not a five-minute job, and the tape has to be replaced with new tape every time the machine is closed again.
Free diagnostics: first we work out whether it is the screen, the drive or the board.

There is a long-running misunderstanding about the RAM. Apple states in writing that «memory is not removable by users» on the Retina 4K 21.5-inch 2017 and 2019, and points to an Authorised Service Provider. iFixit's teardown of the same machine finds that «the CPU and RAM are both modular». Both are true: the memory is in modules, not soldered, but there is no hatch as on the 27-inch.
The display is the delicate part. iFixit notes the tape «isn't too hard to cut, with the right tools, but it must then be replaced to complete any repair», and that «the glass and Retina display are fused together, increasing the cost of replacement».
The drive deserves a word. Apple's 2019 specs list a 256 GB SSD as standard and a Fusion Drive up to 1 TB. Apple defines Fusion Drive as something that «combines a hard drive and flash storage in a single volume»: there is a mechanical disk in there, and it is the part that ages worst.
iFixit gives the 2017 model 3 out of 10 for repairability. We recommend servicing every 18–24 months — our workshop's recommendation, not an Apple-published interval.
